Europe's luxury auto makers are taking an unusual tack to lure American drivers: offering them incentives to travel abroad to buy a car and merging the experience with a high-end driving vacation. European-delivery programs, which are offered by such auto makers as BMW AG, Daimler-Benz AG's Mercedes-Benz unit, Ford Motor Co.'s Volvo unit and Porsche AG, allow U.S. customers to take ownership of a new car overseas before shipping it home.

Pembroke's Steve Shannon is charged with keeping a car line's faithful happy

The Saab 9-3 SportCombi is a well-built European import that is inspiring to drive and treads lightly on the planet and your bank account. Its only fault is that it may leave too small of a footprint for a big family. The name "SportCombi" is clever deodorizing in order to mask the blunt term of "wagon," but it works.

There I was, back in Cali, at the new and chic beachfront Tower 23 Hotel in beautiful San Diego, to celebrate Saab's 60th anniversary with a very special guest. My peers had told me that we would be meeting a racing legend but didn't know exactly who it was. I get very excited to meet legendary drivers that took classic cars to the limit during days when ABS could be short for "Another Beer Sir."

First introduced in 1999, the 9-5 has become a fixture in the Saab lineup. After years of neglect, Saab made a number of improvements to the 9-5 in 2006; for 2007 Saab ups the ante with a longer warranty and an appealing 60th Anniversary option package. But that doesn't change the fact that the basic 9-5 design is still in its ninth year.
